‘avoid the rush-hour’ must be the slogan of large cities the world over. if it is, it’s a slogan no noe takes the least notice of. twice a day, with predictable regularity, the pot boils over. wherever you look it’s people, people, people. the trains which leave or arrive every few minutes are packed: an endless procession of human sardine tins. the streets are so crowded, there is hardly room to move on the pavements. the queues for buses reach staggering proportions. it takes ages for a bus to get to you because the traffic on the roads has virtually come to standstill. even when a bus does at last arrive, it’s so full, it can’t take any more passengers. this whole crazy system of commuting stretches man’s resources to the utmost. the smallest unforeseen event can bring about conditions of utter chaos. a power-cut, for instance, and exceptionally heavy snowfall or a minor derailment must always make city-dwellers realize how precarious the balance is. the extraordinary thing is not that people put up with these conditions, but that they actually choose them in preference to anything else.

large modern cities are too big to control. they impose their own living conditions on the people who inhabit them. city dwellers are obliged by their environment to adopt a wholly unnatural way of life. they lost touch with the land and rhythm of nature. it is possible to live such an air-conditioned existence in a large city that you are barely conscious of the seasons. a few flowers in a public park(if you have the time to visit it) may remind you that it is spring or summer. a few leaves clinging to the pavement may remind you that it is autumn. beyond that, what is going on in nature seems totally irrelevant. all the simple, good things of life like sunshine and fresh air are at a premium. tall buildings blot out the sun. traffic fumes pollute lost. the flow of traffic goes on unceasingly and the noise never stops.the funny thing about it all is that you pay dearly for the ‘privilege’ of living in a city. the demand for accommodation is so great that it is often impossible for ordinary people to buy a house of their own. exorbitant rents must be paid for tiny flats which even country hens would disdain to live in. accommodation apart, the cost of living is very high. just about everything you buy is likely to be more expensive than it would be in the country.

in addition to all this, city-dwellers live under constant threat. the crime rate in most citis is very high. house are burgles with alarming frequency. cities breed crime and violence and are full of places you would be afraid to visit at night. if you think about it, they’re not really fit to live in at all. can anyone really doubt that the country is what man was born for and where he truly belongs

i vividly recall my first visit, as a boy of twelve, to a big town. i had hardly been outside the confines (边缘) of the village where i was born and i had met and talked to no more than a few hundred people; but those few hundred i knew very well.

of course we did sometimes see a strange face, but visitors from the outside world, whose coming always aroused great excitement, were few and far between (稀少). when i reached the town that i mentioned i was first overcome by the striking change from the slow and quiet life i had been used to. surely those swiftly (迅速地) moving vehicles (车辆) must inevitably collide (必然碰撞) with each other----or with us----at any moment, and those tall building collapse (倒坍) and crush (压碎) us all! but i soon forgot those fears and began to notice something even more amazing (令人惊奇的) ----the crowds of people on the pavements (人行道) who were hurrying past each other without a smile. it gradually dawned on me (我渐渐明白) that not only were they not interested in one another; they were strangers, and apparently (明显地) quite content (满意地) to remain so. it was the lack of friendliness among them which most dee* distressed (使痛苦)me.

i know that if we are to profit from the innumerable mechanical inventions (获益于无数机械发明) of this scientific age it is necessary for us to live together in large communities (社区). we are thus enabled (使能够) to provide and enjoy material benefits (利益) which are rarely available (少有的) in small villages----such amenities (令人愉快的事情) as good sanitation (环境卫生), cheap transport (交通), well-stocked (货物贮备充足的) shops----and in addition the very fact of our living together in large numbers makes it possible for us to live a richer social and cultural life. yet it seems to me that the mechanical inventions demand from ordinary men and women so much of their time and attention that they have none left for their fellow human beings.

when i think of those crowded pavements and of those thousands of people hurrying to and fro (来来往往) apparently with no thought for others i cannot help wondering whether the so-called (所谓的) benefits of civilization (文明) in a mechanical age are not being purchased (购买)at too high a price.

The challenges of living in a big city

Never in our history has the phenomenon that living in a big city become so common. With cities growing larger and larger, there has been a steady rise in the number of people who flood into those big cities. Obviously, it will give rise to a host of trials to the new citizens.

With the development of society, in the cities there appear a large number of migrant workers, and this phenomenon has become the focus of the public concern.

Why is there a growing trend to make migrant workers to go to cities. There are three main reasons that should be taken into account. To begin with, as China"s population increasing, the number of farmers are more and more, and in rural areas there don’t have enough land for their farming, so they go to cities to search jobs. In addition, migrant workers in the countryside don’t have enough income, which can’t support the family"s expense, therefore, they go to cities for more money. Last but not least, the city life is more colorful, which rural life can’t compare to, for this reason, more and more people are willing to enter the cities.

As more and more migrant workers into cities, all kinds of problems caused. Such as the rural population shrinks, migrant workers wages can"t guarantee, migrant workers’ children can’t go to school in the cities and so on. So the government should contain the phenomenon that a large number of migrant workers run into cities.

living in a big city住在大城市英语作文2

People are always wondering whether the country or the big city is the idea place to live. Some person may choose to live in the big city, while the others are interested in the quiet and natural surrounding in the country. In my opinion, I would like to live in country, just like my hometown, rather than a big city, such as Beijing or Shanghai.

The foremost reason for dwelling in the countryside is the comfortable and friendly life. Since than the atmosphere in metropolis goes from bad to worse, the neighbors don’t know each other and people suffer from the noisy of cars. Hardly persons could resist the fresh air, the friendly neighbors and the closeness to nature in the countryside or a small town.

Live in the country or a small town. People could enjoy the first cock crow in the morning. The beautiful birds sing in the woods, fish swimming in the river, the

flowers bloom under the sunshine. What a great view. However, in the big city, people live in the forest which be made up of cement and steel. That’s not comfortable.

On the contrary, It is not that I belittle those who would prefer to stay in a big city. I think they have their life with much advantages. The traffic in metropolis is much batter than a village. And high technology could make the life more convenient.

Besides, aBetter education for children and a better medical care could be enjoyed by those who live in a big city.

But live in country means people could have apollution-free environment, a safer food sup* and a bigger and cheaper housing. And I really miss my childhood wallpaper in the country where I grow up. It’s my happiest time.

In conclusion, I strongly hold that living in the countryside is much better than live in a big city because of the quiet surroundings in the countryside.

Different people hold different views about the question whether to live in the big city or a small town. Some people prefer the harmonious atmosphere and slow rhythm in the small place. However, personally speaking, I would like to live in the big city for better education, more job opportunities, and high quality of life.

Firstly, we can get better education in the big city than in the small town. It is well accepted thatschools get no access the com*r commonly in the remote area for lack of fund and relatively poor local economy, let alone advanced facilities and multimedia teaching, but all of these are available in the city. Furthermore, not merely is there better learning environment, the teaching levels in city are far outweigh that in the small town, which will ensure better instruction to students and improvement of overall qualities.

Another advantages to live in a big city is that there are more job opportunities. For example, I want to be an excellent journalist after graduation and I am looking for a part-time job to accumulate experience. Contrary to the the situation in the small town that only in the cultural center can I find a job relative to my major, there are more choices in the city, such as magazine, news office, publishing company and so on. So abundant job opportunities there are that I can choose a most suitable onewhich can not only enrich my resume, but also functions as a valuable experience to put me in a favorable position in the future job market.

Finally, living in a big city is more convenient and comfortable. We can take public transportation to go to workplaces, use fitness facilities to keep healthy, buy any necessaries and commodities in a large market, get access to more TV channels or watch movies in the theater, and so on. The advancements of big city improve our living standards to a great degree, and life has been more enjoyable compared with living in the small town.

Therefore, we can safely conclude that we can get better education, more suitable jobs and lead a superior life in a big city than in a small town, and it is not surprising that the majority of people tend tomigrate from small towns to big cities today.

Some people prefer to live in a small town. Others prefer to live in a big city. Which place would you prefer to live in? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

I grew up in a small town and then moved to a big city, so I have experienced the good and bad sides of both. I never thought that I would like living in a big city, but I was wrong. After ten years of living in one, I cant imagine ever living in a small town again.

Small towns and big cities both have some problems in terms of transportation. In a small town, you have to own a car to ensure a comfortable living. You cant get around without one because there isnt any kind of public transportation. Big cities generally have heavy traffic and expensive parking, but there you have a choice of taking public transportation. Its not free, but its often cheaper than driving when you consider gas and time. Especially if you dont have a car, youre better off in the city.

I love the excitement of big cities. Small towns have a slow pace. Large cities mean you have to adapt to a variety of situations, like finding a new route to work or trying a new restaurant. I enjoy that challenge very much. Another pan of the excitement of city living is the variety of cultural activities available. There is a wide assortment of theatre, music and dance performances available in big cities. These things are rare in small ones.

The final thing I like about large cities is the diversity of the people. The United States is made up of people of different races, religions, abilities, and interests. However, you seldom find such a variety of people in a smaller town. I think that living in an area where everyone was just like me would quickly become boring.

Of course, security is a concern, and thats one area where small towns are superior to big cities. Still, I would rather be a bit more cautious and live in a large city than to feel secure but bored.

  My View on University Ranking

  3. 你认为

  My View on University Ranking

Nobody could have failed to notice the fact that university ranking has gained increasing popularity --- institutions home and abroad are always interested in it; newspapers and magazines are fond of carrying the news. Unfortunately, it has also given rise to some problems never thought of. Confronted with the dilemma, should we carry on the practice? When it comes to this question, people’s views vary from one to another.

People who support ranking have their reasons. They are convinced that it can stimulate people, teachers and students alike, to work harder so that they can climb on the ladder or at least maintain their position. In this way, universities can produce more talents and knowledge demanded by our society. Also, supporters of university ranking maintain that it can act as a guide for employers when they decide where to find right employees..

But others may not agree. These people would argue that university ranking might force universities to care more about their position in the ranking but not about research that they are expected to do. For instance, it is often reported that some professors spend more time in bribing than in labs in order to have an edge in the fierce competition. Another good case in point is that some scholars even sacrifice their integrity to plagiarize under the pressure of “publish or perish”.

Who is right? Of course both sides have their reasons. As far as I am concerned, we might as well stop the practice for the good of universities and society. Universities are a place for free academic study. Only when scholars are free to in their pursuits, can they make contribution to society.

  The Certificate Craze

Almost no one in China has failed to notice the phenomenon that a growing number of people are enthusiastic about pursuing various kinds of certificates. Taking a look around, one can find numerous examples with ease. A common case in point is that students spend a great deal of time and energy attending a great variety of certificate-oriented training courses to ensure a better score。

The purpose of acquiring certificates varies from individuals to individuals. For students, as the job market competition is becoming increasingly fierce, not only can a certain certificate prove their capabilities, but also will put them in a favorable position in the employment market and the development of their career. When it comes to white-collared workers, more job-related certificates often guarantee greater opportunities for a salary raise and promotion. What’s more, it is also a ideal way to enhance their job techniques and sharpen their competitiveness。

From my perspective, the merits of pursuing certificates are self-evident. However, we should also bear in mind that it is the practical skills, such as management, cooperation, communication, rather than certificates that guarantee one’s accomplishment in career. Accordingly, we might as well attach great importance to both certificates and the improvement of one’s comprehensive abilities。

  The Way to Success

"Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration." And here comes our question, what is the way to success?

A strong will and great efforts are the most essential two keys to the door of success.

Why do people fail to achieve their goal? The reason is that most of them give up halfway due to their lack of a strong will once they encounter any difficulty. A man of a strong will always sticks to his cause no matter how tough it might be.

Would Thomas Edison be such a great man in history if he had done nothing but possessing a strong will? We are all familiar with his story that he had tried one thousand kinds of materials before he finally made his great bulb light up. Without hard effort, Edison might have been a nobody. Without efforts, no one can succeed.

To sum up, a strong will and great efforts can help one open up the way to success. Where there is a will with efforts, there is a way.

本次六级考试作文题为The way to success,与本次四级考试作文Nothing succeeds without a strong will遥相呼应,大同小异,都是在讨论成功这一话题。
